HISTORY

1944Layman Edwin (Happy) Hogg starts working as an airport chaplain in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
1951The first known airport chapel opens at Boston’s Logan International Airport, Massachusetts, USA, under the direction of Richard Cardinal Cushing.
1967The International Conference of Civil Aviation Chaplains, IACAC is founded in Brussels, Belgium, on 21 September.
1991On 5 August the Lutheran parish of Dresden-Klotzsche approaches the airport management with the idea of setting up an airport chaplaincy. This is not possible at the time due to space constraints. However, the management expresses willingness to look at the possibility again later.
1998On 8 September the foundation stone is laid for the transformation of the former hangar 219 (built in 1958/59) into a modern airport terminal.
1999In Oktober, pastor Bernd Fischer and M. Andreas Sembdner participate in the 32nd conference of www.iacac.aero, the International Conference of Civil Aviation Chaplains, in Munich.
2000In autumn, pastor Bernd Fischer and M. Andreas Sembdner attend the 33rd IACAC conference in Johannesburg, South Africa. M.A. Sembdner attends the conference almost yearly until 2017. From 2009 to 2017, he maintains the English website of the organization.
2001The opening ceremony of the terminal and the airport chapel is held on 25 March. From the beginning, the airport chaplaincy has its own website and maintains active contact with international experts. Dresden Airport ensures that the office is generously equipped, including internet.
2001On 25 May the first ecumenical service on Ascension Day takes place in the Dresden Airport terminal. It is accompanied by music from the Dresden-Klotzsche trombone choir. This service takes place annually (though in 2020 and 2021 it is not possible, due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
2002On 20 January, the Zweite Deutsche Fernsehen (ZDF, the second German national television network) broadcasts the prayer service live from the gallery level of the airport. The airport provides its generous support.
2002The Conference of Protestant Airport Chaplaincies in Hamburg is established on 3 June
2003The Dresden Airport chaplaincy takes an active part in all airport festivals with its own stand.
2004The Protestant Airport Chaplains of Germany hold their 5th conference at Dresden Airport on 30 June.
2006The autumn conference of the board of IACAC is held at Dresden Airport on 15 November, with guests from Budapest, Hungary, as well as Dales, Texas, USA.
2008On 8 and 9 October the first Ecumenical Conference of Airport Chaplains at Dresden International Airport brings together airport chaplains from Germany, Austria, Switzerland (OEKOF) (www.airportchapel.de ).
2013On 6 June the Elbe flood reaches its highest level. As an emergency hospital, the airport is involved in patient care. Armed forces helicopters transfer patients to external hospitals.
2021On 8 and 9 October the 13th OEKOF conference convenes in Dresden. On 8 October we celebrate
20 years of the Dresden Airport Chaplaincy with guests.
